Dr Priyanka shahi
A gynaecologist and an infertility specialist, proudly representing the state of Bihar on this prestigious social platform of Mrs. India. I hail from Bettiah, West Champaran, Bihar. I am 35 years old, daughter of a cardiologist, wife of a neuro-surgeon, mother of a two year old girl. Having grown up in a typical male dominated topographical space, I have first-hand knowledge of the trials and travails of womanhood. However, I am grateful for the constant support and encouragement of my parents, for always standing by me and for helping me become what I am today. Besides being a doctor, I would like to be known as an intelligent woman, a courageous woman, a compassionate woman, a woman who inspires by being. I want our young women to know that they matter, they belong, so don’t be afraid, be focussed, determined, hopeful and empowered. Use your education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life. We have to teach our girls to strive to reach as high as humanly possible. As women, we must stand up for ourselves, we must stand up for each other and we must stand up for justice for all.
In my line of work, I frequently meet women suffering multiple pregnancies for the sake of a male child. Likewise, I have come across several women stigmatized by family and society on account of infertility. It is sad to see the female womb which is the site of creation and genesis become the site of control and oppression in our society. Domestic violence is not merely about physical assault. It is very much in action when women are not allowed control over their own bodies, when their bodies and mind are both shackled. To inform, to educate and to empower women, to encourage them to take back the control of their bodies and mind, this is what I seek to do while discharging my professional duty, this is what I seek to profess from this platform. I alsoseek to proclaim from this stage the indomitable spirit of women that will not be held back, the voice that will not be silenced. And yes, beauty is not merely skin deep. It is the mind made flesh.
